Shower Benches, ADA Seats & More from Freedom Showers™

Prevent Slips and Falls with a Shower Transfer Bench

We carry a large selection of shower seats to suit your individual accessibility needs. Quality construction with a stainless steel frame, most of our Freedom accessible bathing benches can easily fold up against the wall when not in use, and come in a variety of designer seat options: teak, wood, phenolic white, white padded, and closed-cell foam.

For Homes

We recommend our wall-mounted fold-down seats (with legs and without legs) as the safest option in your accessible shower - avoid bathroom falls, while enjoying the comfort of sitting.

For Businesses

Our ADA shower seats are designed to comply with the Federal ADA guidelines (ADAAG). We carry a variety of L-shaped ADA options perfect for your commercial project. For unique seating situations, we also offer bath seats, rolling shower commode chairs, and folding shower chairs with back & arms.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • For anyone who struggles with mobility or balance issues, or who fatigues easily, showering can be challenging, and potentially dangerous. Having the ability to shower sitting down significantly reduces the risk of a fall.

A wall mounted shower seat is significantly safer than a portable shower seat, as there is no chance of the seat moving. This is important if someone needs to transfer to a shower seat, or if someone slips or sits heavily into the chair.

Wall mounted shower seats can also be folded up when not in use, they don’t need alternative storage space.

  • The Freedom Shower Seats are wall mounted, so no they are not removable. We carry roll in shower chairs for those who want the option to remove a chair.

  • It’s important to make sure your folding shower bench is big enough to be comfortable, but not too wide for your shower. It should fit on the wall across from the shower head. You’ll want to make sure the inner side of the shower bench maximum 1.5” from the wall, to be ADA compliant.

You’ll also want to make sure the outer edge of the folding shower bench doesn’t stick out over the shower threshold to prevent the seat from pushing the shower curtain out over the low threshold, causing water to run out onto the bathroom floor.

  • If we can confirm that you purchased the original shower bench from Accessibility Professionals, so we can ensure the correct replacement seat top size, you can order a replacement seat top from us. You’ll save money by not having to purchase a whole new seat.

  • The weight capacity of each shower seat is on the individual product page. Generally, wall supported shower seats without legs will meet the ADA load requirements of 250lbs of static weight, so long as the seat is installed properly with reinforced walls. Some shower seats with a back may hold more.

Fold up shower seats with legs will have a higher weight capacity, anywhere from 400 lbs. to 900lbs. Again, it’s important to make sure they are properly installed into reinforced walls.

  • Yes, any shower chairs with legs will have hinged legs that fold up with the seat.

  • Phenolic is a hard-composite plastic material that is ideal for shower benches, as they are non-porous, waterproof seats that are very durable and easy to clean. They can be made to have a wood grain look. Most of our shower seats are phenolic with a stainless-steel frame.

  • Naugahyde is a composite knit fabric backing and expanded (PVC) plastic coating to create a waterproof cover over the padded shower bench.

  • The padded seats can be more comfortable, especially for elderly people who are uncomfortable sitting on hard surfaces. Over time, a padded seat top may become worn out or split, they could be replaced if necessary.

Phenolic seats are often available in more color options or a wood grain look, so they tend to be more aesthetically pleasing, and they are more durable in the long run.

Each of these materials have pros and cons, and it really comes down to customer preference.  Both seats are waterproof and easy to clean, and the frames are usually exactly the same.

  • Most shower seats cannot be used in a bathtub, because they have legs that are not designed to stand on the curvature of the bathtub floor. Many of the shower seats without legs do have a mounting bracket on the frame that has to be mounted to the wall under the seat, so they cannot be installed in a bathtub. We do have bathtub seats that are designed specifically to create a safe tub transfer seat.

  • It’s important that folding shower seats are installed properly on a wood-backed wall. A handy-person with the right tools, including a stud-finder, for example, would be a good person to ask to install the folding shower seats. If you are remodeling your bathroom or shower, ask your contractor to add reinforcement in the walls behind the new shower.

  • The ADA design requirements say that shower seat-top be 17” to 19” above the floor. Many of our seats with legs are designed to be adjustable between these heights. If you don’t need to follow ADA requirements, because the shower seat is being installed in a private residence, you can choose to have a seat at a different height if you prefer. This is often desired by people who are taller. There are some seats with legs with a bigger height range, or you can choose a wall supported shower seat without legs, and install it at your preferred height.
