Walk-in Shower Stall with Seat
Future proof your bathroom with a Freedom Walk-in Shower - a practical and stylish solution for individuals with current or future mobility needs. These low threshold shower kits offer safer entry than standard tubs, but still maintain a traditional shower appearance. This makes them perfect for those who don't yet need fully barrier-free access, but still want something more accessible than an existing bathtub, without sacrificing style, such as seniors who are aging in place.
Our walk-in shower stalls can come with a built-in bench or you can add a folding shower seat in a style and size that matches your other bathroom fixtures. Our showers are available in one-piece models for new construction or multi-piece shower units for renovation projects. Plan ahead for changing mobility needs or create a safer bathing space for the whole family, today.
Features of Freedom Walk-in Showers
- Low threshold design - A 3 to 5 inch entry contains water, but is much lower that stepping over a traditional bathtub entrance.
- Built-in seat - No more worrying about standing the entire time you shower, which is especially helpful for aging or recovering.
- Fits your existing space - Many sizes are available with drains on either side to work with your current plumbing.
- Non-slip flooring - This adds an extra layer of safety to the shower experience.
- 30-year warranty - For peace of mind, our Freedom Walk-in Shower stalls have a 30-year manufacturer’s warranty.
Other Shower Stall Variations
If you or a loved one uses a wheelchair or mobility device, a handicap accessible shower may be more appropriate. Designed with barrier-free access, they are common in residential settings where users have limited mobility or expect to in the future.
For public-access spaces and commercial settings, ADA-compliant showers are most likely required, which has strict requirements outlined in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
There are two typical ADA shower categories:
- ADA roll-in showers: barrier-free threshold with minimum inside dimensions of 60" x 30" designed for roll in wheelchair entry
- ADA transfer showers: low threshold entry with absolute inside dimensions of 36" x 36" offering a space-saving option with built-in seating and clearance space for lateral transfers from a wheelchair or walker.
We also offer ANSI Type B units for multi-family housing under HUD and Fair Housing guidelines.
Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a low-threshold walk-in shower?
Freedom Easy Step in Showers have a 3” or 4” threshold, to create an easier access to the shower. The low transition is good for people who have good mobility, but don’t want to step over a tall edge. Some models have a molded seat, or you can add any options like a folding seat, grab bars, a handheld or fixed shower head, to suit your preferences for a beautiful, quality aging-in-place option.
Can I add a shower door to a low-threshold walk-in shower?
Yes. The advantage of installing a Freedom Easy Step Shower, is that you can install a door track on the 3”–4” threshold, unlike our Accessible showers. We don’t sell full shower doors, but you should be able to find doors at most building supply or renovation stores. We still suggest that it might be better to just install a shower curtain and rod, as it will be easier to get in and out of your shower, but we know some people prefer adding a door.
Can I add grab bars to a walk-in shower kit?
If you have chosen a Freedom Shower with full reinforcement in the walls, then yes, you can add grab bars anywhere in the shower. If you’ve chosen a model that doesn’t have reinforcement in the walls (model starting with APT) you will need to add backing behind the shower where you might want to add grab bars, or look for factory installed grab bars.
What is the weight capacity for built-in or folding shower seats?
Molded seats have a weight capacity of 300lbs. Wall mounted folding seats will have different weight capacities depending on each model. Check the specifications of the seat you choose to determine weight capacity.
What is the smallest stand up, walk-in shower?
The smallest Freedom easy step shower we have is 48” wide by 37” deep, in both a multi-piece or a 1-piece model. The largest we carry is 60” x 36” in a one-piece model.
What size walk-in shower is best for replacing a bathtub?
For a standard residential bathroom, a 60” x 31” easy step shower will replace most regular bathtubs. However, we recommend choosing a shower that is 60” x 33” or bigger if you have the room for a little extra elbow room.
Are walk in showers a good idea?
If you are in your forever home, and want to make sure you are able to stay living at home as you get older, a walk-in shower is an excellent choice. Unless there are other limitations in the home who still need a bathtub, you can replace a tub with a walk in or barrier free shower while staying in as long as possible. Most people in older communities are replacing bathtubs with a step in or barrier free shower while they still have a choice.
Can walk-in showers help with aging in place?
Absolutely. Walk-in showers are one of the smartest upgrades you can make if you want to future proof your home. Adding additional attachments such as built-in seats, grab bars, and a handheld shower head, you can prolong the life of your shower and the safety of it for years to come.
Is a walk-in shower with seat safer for seniors?
Yes. When you can rest while showering, you don't get as tired, and you're much less likely to slip or lose your balance. It's especially helpful if standing for long periods is tough, or if you just want the peace of mind that comes with having a stable place to sit.
What size works best for a walk-in shower with seating?
If you have the space, go for at least 60" long by 33" deep, that gives you room for the seat plus space to move around comfortably. For smaller spaces, corner seats or folding benches can work.
Can I replace my bathtub with a walk-in shower kit?
Yes, it is a very common occurrence. Our kits come in standard tub sizes (usually 60" long), so they fit right where your old tub used to be. The multi-piece kits are great for renovations because they fit through your doorway, and if you're building new, the one-piece units go in seamlessly.
What makes a walk-in shower actually safer?
The key things that make a real difference are:
- A low step-in so you don't trip getting in
- Textured flooring that won't get slippery when wet
- A seat so you can rest when you need to
- Grab bars in the right spots for support
- A handheld shower head so you can control where the water goes
