Incredible right? It\u2019s a combination of families having fewer children, the baby boomer generation becoming senior citizens, and Canadians living longer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Canadian government has long taken notice of this trend and has begun to put more thought into the long-term impact of an aging population on the national and provincial budgets.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>They\u2019ve come to realize two things:<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Canadians want to live in their own homes for as long as possible<\/li>\n<li>Helping Canadians age-in-place is not only better for Canadians, but it can also be more affordable when compared to funding long-term care facilities.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And that\u2019s part of the reason why we now have the <span style=\"color: #286cba;\">Home Accessibility Tax Credit (HATC)<\/span>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\">Home Accessibility Tax Credit? What is it?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>What better way to reduce the tax burden of funding expensive long-term facilities than to offer Canadians tax relief on age-proofing their home?<\/p>\n<p>The HATC is a non-refundable tax credit <strong>worth up to $1,500<\/strong>. Qualified individuals can receive 15% in tax relief on up to $10,000 in eligible renovations. The tax credit took effect in 2016 and is an annual tax deduction, meaning if you require more accessible renovations in the following tax season then you can again deduct eligible renovation expenses from your federal taxes.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\">Who qualifies?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re <strong>over 65<\/strong> or have a <strong>disability tax certificate<\/strong>, then you are a qualifying individual.<\/p>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<p>If you <strong>support a qualified individual<\/strong>, you may also qualify for tax relief.<\/p>\n<p><em>Examples:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Spouse or common-law of a qualified individual<\/li>\n<li>Relative caretaker of a qualified individual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\">Is your home eligible?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Your <strong>primary residence<\/strong>, if owned by you or your partner, is eligible. If you have more than one eligible home, the maximum claim is still only $10,000 total (e.g., $4,000 for home A and $6,000 for home B).<\/p>\n<p>Other possible eligible dwellings are the <strong>homes of caretakers who support qualified individuals<\/strong>. If a caretaker owns their home and the qualified individual ordinarily lives there, it likely qualifies.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\">What renovations qualify?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Generally, if the renovation is permanent and either helps you access your home or reduces your chance of injury, then it should qualify.<\/p>\n<p><em>Examples of renovations that <strong>should qualify<\/strong>:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\"><a style=\"color: #286cba; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/freedomshowers.com\/Shower-and-ADA-Bathroom-Accessories\/Bathroom-Grab-Bars\">Grab bars<\/a><\/span><\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\"><a style=\"color: #286cba; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/freedomshowers.com\/Shower-and-ADA-Bathroom-Accessories\/Bathroom-Grab-Bars\/APO-WR-SS\">rails<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\"><a style=\"color: #286cba; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/freedomshowers.com\/Handicapped-Accessible-Showers\">Roll-in shower units<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\"><a style=\"color: #286cba; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/freedomshowers.com\/Shower-Pans\/Accessible-Barrier-Free-Shower-Pans\">Accessible shower pans<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\"><a style=\"color: #286cba; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/freedombathtubs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walk-in bathtubs<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\"><a style=\"color: #286cba; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/freedomliftsystems.com\/Wheelchair-Lifts-for-Homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wheelchair lifts<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Widening your doorways<\/li>\n<li>Permits for construction<\/li>\n<li>Labour costs from professionals<\/li>\n<li>Equipment rentals, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Renovations that probably<strong>\u00a0don&#8217;t qualify<\/strong>:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The cost of maintenance or repairs<\/li>\n<li>Labour costs from family members or yourself<\/li>\n<li>Furniture or household appliances<\/li>\n<li>Electronic home-entertainment devices<\/li>\n<li>Housekeeping, gardening, or security costs, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\">How to claim the tax credit<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s always best to consult the actual <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\"><a style=\"color: #286cba; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cra-arc.gc.ca\/tx\/ndvdls\/tpcs\/ncm-tx\/rtrn\/cmpltng\/ddctns\/lns360-390\/398\/398-eng.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CRA website<\/a> <\/span><\/span>when it comes to claiming tax credits. That said, to claim the home accessibility tax credit you\u2019ll need to complete Schedule 12 (the home accessibility tax credit)<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you keep invoices, receipts, and agreements as you\u2019ll need some of this information to fill out the Schedule 12, plus if the CRA ever requests supporting documents you\u2019ll want to have them on hand.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #286cba;\">You may be able to claim this expense a few times!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Your renovation may also qualify for the<span style=\"color: #286cba;\"> <a style=\"color: #286cba;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cra-arc.gc.ca\/medical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical expense tax credit<\/a><\/span>, or other provincial accessible home tax credits, which\u00a0means extra tax relief for eligible home renovations.<\/p>\n<p>Tax relief is always welcome, especially when it comes to age-proofing your home so you can age-in-place.
